DANTES/DSST
Exam Descriptions
The material in DANTES examinations is general education material,
typically taken within the first two years of college. Credits
granted by DANTES exams are usually the same as the corresponding
course at an on ground campus. For example, if a Personal Finance
class would grant 3 units on campus the Personal Finance DANTES
would grant the same.
DANTES exams typically offer 3 credits, or units, corresponding to a
semester course. DANTES
does have some upper division tests available as well.
CLEP does not offer any upper division tests.
However, there are some CLEP tests that can earn you as many
as 6 or even 12 credits, depending on your chosen college and CLEP
score.
What's it like to take a DANTES exam?
All DANTES exams are administered by computer, except Principles
of Public Speaking. Exams are
in a multiple choice format.
Each exam is on average 90 minutes long with few exceptions.
Check the fact sheet for the DSST test your interested in.
You should allow at least two hours to complete your testing. It is
recommended that you not take more than two exams in any given day.
When do I get my scores?
Since the testing is computer based you should be able to get your
unofficial score and pass/fail results immediately at the end of
your test. Your official
score results are mailed to you by DSST about 4-6 weeks after you
take the assessment. When you
take the DSST, you will be given the option of having your scores
mailed to your current college for evaluation as well as to your
home.
What does a DANTES exam
cost?
DANTES exams are just $80 to take, plus any service fees to the
testing center. Service fees are generally below $20.
Military service members can
take the DANTES exams for free.
What DANTES exams are available?
Currently there are 38 college courses which are offered through
DANTES testing. The exams offered are the equivalent to the courses
students take in their first two years of college. You can use these
exams to accelerate your degree completion and test out of many
prerequisite and beginner-level courses.
